Knowing When to Pivot, Pause, or Persevere

Running a business as a woman of faith is not just about strategy—it’s about discernment. It’s about listening to the whisper of the Holy Spirit in the middle of the spreadsheet, the slow sales season, or the unexpected growth spurt. And let’s be honest: sometimes it’s hard to know what season we’re in.

Are we supposed to keep pushing forward?

Do we need to step back and rest?

Or is God nudging us in a brand-new direction?

Let’s talk about how to recognize when to pivot, pause, or persevere—and how to do it all through the lens of faith.

Pivot: When God Is Redirecting You

Pivoting isn’t failure. It’s obedience. It’s that nudge that says: “This direction served you for a while, but now it’s time to shift.”

Maybe the product isn’t working. Maybe your audience has changed. Maybe God is simply evolving the vision He placed in your heart.

How to know it’s time to pivot:

  • There’s deep discomfort or misalignment you can’t shake

  • Doors are closing, despite your best efforts

  • God has been confirming new ideas or opportunities repeatedly

  • You're excited again when you think of the new direction

    • “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” — Isaiah 30:21

When God says pivot, He’s not pulling you back—He’s pushing you deeper into purpose.

Pause: When Rest is the Assignment

Pausing is one of the hardest things to do in a culture that celebrates hustle. But even Jesus withdrew to quiet places. Even God rested.

As Christian businesswomen, we need to stop glorifying burnout and start honoring holy rest. A pause could be personal (like tending to family or your own health) or professional (like taking time to realign your vision or refresh your creativity).

How to know it’s time to pause:

  • You feel burned out, emotionally numb, or disconnected

  • You’ve lost joy in something that once excited you

  • God keeps highlighting “rest,” “be still,” or “wait” in Scripture or prayer

  • You’re sensing the need for clarity before moving forward

    • “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

You don’t lose momentum in the pause—you gain clarity.

Persevere: When the Breakthrough Is on the Other Side of Obedience

Perseverance isn’t glamorous, but it’s deeply biblical. There are times when God’s direction is clear, but the road is hard. In those moments, the enemy whispers, “Give up.” But God whispers, “Keep going.”

How to know it’s time to persevere:

  • God gave you this assignment and hasn’t released you from it

  • You’re seeing some fruit, even if it’s small

  • Others are being impacted, even when it’s tough

  • You feel peace when you pray, even if results aren’t immediate

      • “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:4

Perseverance grows us. It sharpens our faith and deepens our dependence on God.

So, What Season Are You In?

Pause for a moment. Breathe. Ask the Lord: “What do You want me to do with this business right now?”

Let Him speak. Let peace be your guide. Let faith lead the way.

Because whether you pivot, pause, or persevere—when it’s done with God, it’s never wasted.
